CHOM - Overview

Mission
To respect the human dignity of the poor and improve their lives.
History of CHOM:

Cathedral Health & Outreach Ministries (CHOM) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization providing social and health services to poor and homeless men, women, children, and youth living in the Houston area.  The mission of CHOM is to respect the human dignity of the poor and improve their lives.  During 2009, CHOM served a total of 10,153 unduplicated individuals and had over 131,000 total client visits. In 2009 CHOM provided 110,506 meals, 19,712 showers, and did 22,898 loads of laundry.  During 2010, CHOM estimates serving approximately 11,000 unduplicated individuals.

CHOM’s programs include The Beacon, a day center providing essential services and case management; the Homeless Youth Street Outreach Project, which provides case management and licensed mental health counseling services to homeless youth; Brigid’s Hope, a transitional residence serving homeless women who have left the Texas prison and jail system; the Cathedral Justice Project, a legal aid program providing pro-bono legal services to the poor and homeless; and Cathedral Clinic, a health clinic providing medical and mental health services to homeless men, women, and children.

As part of a hundred-year tradition of charity, Christ Church Cathedral established three independent 501(c)(3) nonprofits (Cathedral Health Ministries, Brigid’s Hope, and The Beacon) over the span of the last decade. In 2007, it was determined that banding together under one mission would provide a more streamlined, effective administration of these independent nonprofits, thereby benefiting our clients and community. Accordingly, last summer these three entities merged into a single nonprofit organization, Cathedral Health and Outreach Ministries (CHOM).
